Covington, Kentucky, a city known for punching above its weight limit, is continuing to thrive and prosper, according to Economic Director Tom West. The city's growth has been a topic of discussion in recent years, with strategic plans presented by Camoin and Associates aiming to take Covington further into the future.

The strategies of Camoin and Associates focus on promoting business growth, leveraging local assets, enhancing workforce development, and improving infrastructure and amenities to attract residents and visitors. The specific goals and strategies for Covington, however, can be found in the official report or the city's planning documents.

In a bid to further stimulate growth, the city has made a similar agreement with Kentucky Employers' Mutual for workers' compensation insurance. This move is expected to provide a more cost-effective solution for local businesses.

Looking ahead, the city is preparing for significant infrastructure changes. The fourth street bridge is scheduled for demolition in January 2026, with a shuttle service to be implemented on the 12th street bridge to minimise impact. The new bridge is expected in 2028.

City officials are also considering combining the celebration for Kenton County's 250th anniversary next year with that of the city turning 70. This joint celebration would serve as a testament to the city's rich history and its continued growth.

On the financial front, the first ordinance amends the budget for the July 1, 2024, to June 30, 2025, year. Commissioners have also accepted the strategy of Camoin and Associates for the city.

In other news, Mayor Ron Washington was authorised to execute commercial rent incentive agreements with several businesses, including Rivertown Vintage, LLC, Pilates on Pike, LLC, Breathe Wellness Studio, LLC, and Feel Something, LLC.

The city administrator, Brian Haney, is seeking input from commissioners about the agenda for the upcoming open house at the firehouse. Additionally, the subject of installing a sign and a flagpole at the intersection of Ky 16 and KY 3716 was considered and will come back up for discussion at a later date.

Commissioners have also authorised a settlement agreement with Gator Newport Partners, LTD, regarding real property sales and easements along Carothers Road. The second reading of an ordinance for the new budget passed, with an amendment, and the second ordinance passes the new budget effective from July 1, 2025, to June 30, 2026.

The Riegler Blacktop was the low bidder for the Taylor Mill street program, with the commissioners set to decide who the contract will go to at the July meeting. Lastly, Pat Frew, from the Covington Business Council, and several board members updated the city on the council and highlighted the benefits of belonging to the group. John Hammons, CDBG/Home Coordinator, announced the five-year consolidated plan will be available on the city's website.
