VW Drops Mandatory Appraisals, Embraces Flexible Employee Conversations

Volkswagen (VW) is transforming its employee evaluation system. The mandatory employee navigator (MAG), in place since 2011, will no longer apply to around 110,000 employees at German VW sites. The change aims to make employee conversations more flexible and voluntary.

Previously, the MAG was a requirement for all employees, except for talents targeting higher-value tasks and managers at all levels. Now, VW is doing away with this rule, allowing employees to initiate conversations with their managers or seek feedback independently throughout the year.

The works council will oversee this transition and evaluate the voluntary approach. It will then decide on the next MAG round. The group of employees for whom employee meetings remain mandatory is the Works Council, as required by German co-determination law.

VW's move to a more flexible feedback culture signals a shift towards continuous, individualised conversations. Around 110,000 employees will be affected by this change, which aims to foster a more dynamic and employee-driven approach to professional development.
