Virgin Media O2 Launches First Giga Site in Paddington, Promising Enhanced 5G
Virgin Media O2 has launched its first Giga Site in Paddington, London. The site, a result of a strategic partnership with Nokia, promises enhanced 5G connectivity for users.
The new site can deliver an impressive 10Gbps of throughput, supporting over 2,000 simultaneous 5Mbps HD video streams. This remarkable feat is achieved by combining low, mid, and high-band spectrum with Nokia's innovative dual-band massive MIMO technology.
The spectrum used was recently acquired from Vodafone UK, with the transfer coordinated by UK regulators and the involved corporate teams. Virgin Media O2 wasted no time, putting the newly acquired spectrum to use just one minute after transfer.
Mark Atkinson, Head of Radio Access Networks at Nokia, praised the partnership and deployment. Dr Robert Joyce, Director of Mobile Access Engineering at O2, also commented on the switch-on and future plans.
Virgin Media O2's first Giga Site in Paddington marks a significant step towards enhanced 5G connectivity. With plans to roll out 1,000 such sites nationwide in the next year, the company aims to boost mobile connectivity for its customers.
