Tragedy Strikes León as Construction Businessman Abel Ramos Dies in Forest Fire
Abel Ramos Falagan, a 35-year-old construction businessman and volunteer firefighter, lost his life while battling a large forest fire near León, Spain on August 12, 2025. The incident was part of a series of devastating fires in the León and Zamora regions, which resulted in thousands of residents being evacuated and hundreds of hectares being burned, making it one of the largest fires recorded in Spain that year.
Ramos, the owner of Donceas Building, was a committed entrepreneur who demonstrated that economic development can go hand in hand with nature protection. His company reflected the legacy of two previous generations, combining experience with a strong commitment to offering sustainable and tailored solutions for each project.
In addition to his business endeavours, Ramos was vice-president of the Bañez Motorcycle Club and heavily involved in his local community in Quintana y Congosto. Although he lived elsewhere, he regularly provided construction machinery for local festivals and community projects, showing strong ties to his hometown.
Ramos' involvement in the motorcycling community was also significant. The Bañeza Motorcycle Club, of which he was a key member, expressed condolences and remembered his participation in the Bañeza Urban Race. They stated that with Abel's death, part of the club goes, but his memory will always be present with all those who love motorcycling.
The León Diary reported that during the last edition of the Grand Prix, Ramos' role was crucial. He provided resources for the fire control operational team and was integrated into the operational team for the forest fire control. Tragically, Ramos was trying to clear undergrowth with a brush cutter to stop the spread of the flames when a sudden change in wind joined two fire fronts, trapping him.
The death of Abel Ramos has devastated his parents, Emilia and Joaquín, who are well known in the region for their construction company, Construcciones Somar. Ramos' younger brother, Sergio, and his friend Jaime were also present during the incident and were seriously injured by the flames.
The Bañeza Motor Racing sports club also wanted to express its condolences and remember Abel's involvement in their events. Ramos was fundamental to the success of the Grand Prix event held from August 8 to 10, and instrumental in the timing and direction of the race.
