Vietnam Unveils 2030 Digital Plan: Attracts Intel, Microsoft, Boosts Private Investment
Vietnam's Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Chi Dung has signed a decision approving a program to encourage private enterprises to participate in developing telecommunications and other infrastructure. The program, aiming to support national digital transformation by 2030, targets high-potential digital infrastructure including data centers, cloud computing, and high-quality broadband connectivity.
The program seeks to attract at least two global technology giants, Intel and Microsoft, to invest in and operate big data and artificial intelligence data centers in Viet Nam. It also aims for private enterprises to invest in and own at least four additional international undersea cable routes by 2030. To facilitate these objectives, the program will issue detailed guidelines, streamline administrative procedures, and establish a transparent legal framework to encourage investment.
The private sector is expected to invest in new, modern, large-scale data centers that meet international and green standards, accounting for at least half of the national capacity serving the public. The program aims to establish at least two leading domestic private enterprises in digital infrastructure construction and operation, on par with advanced countries. Under the program, 5G coverage will expand in industrial parks, high-tech zones, major urban centers, and other areas with digital economy potential, with nationwide rollout to follow. The program sets targets for average annual revenue growth of 12 to 15 percent for terrestrial mobile telecommunications providers operating without radio frequencies, and 10 to 12 percent for fixed broadband service providers.
The approved program is set to transform Vietnam's digital landscape by 2030. It encourages private investment in data centers, undersea cables, and 5G expansion, with the aim of establishing leading domestic enterprises and attracting global technology giants. The program's success will depend on the issuance of clear guidelines, streamlined procedures, and a transparent legal framework.
