US sees lowest quarterly level of recalled products in 3 years, according to Sedgwick data
In an unusual turn of events, the second quarter of 2023 has witnessed the highest number of product recalls since 2008. A total of 1,636 recall events were reported, a modest decline from the 1,697 events in the same period the previous year.
The consumer product sector experienced a significant increase, with 109 recalls in Q2 2023, marking a 7.9% rise from the first quarter. The total number of consumer product units recalled also spiked, rising 163.2% to 12.21 million. Despite this surge, Q2 2023 registered the lowest quarterly total since the same period in 2022.
The automotive industry was not immune to this trend, with the number of automotive recalls rising by 14.4% to 246. The average recall size for automotive recalls was 29,925 units, and the total number of units affected reached 7.36 million.
Interestingly, the food sector saw a decrease in recalls, with the number of Food and Drug Administration (FDA) food recalls dropping by 79.6% to 143 events. The total number of units affected by FDA food recalls also decreased significantly, reaching 14.32 million units—the lowest quarterly total since Q2 2022.
Despite the increase in recall events, the total number of units affected in the first half of 2023 was lower than the total number affected in the first half of 2022. The first half of 2023 saw 211.25 million units impacted, compared to 384.17 million units in the same period the previous year.
The divergence between the number of recall events and the number of impacted units in Q2 2023 may be due to factors such as smaller batch production, earlier defect detection, and a heightened culture of vigilance and recall readiness across industries.
It's worth noting that Q2 2023 is one of only five quarters in the past five years in which fewer than 100 million units were affected, and it had one of only nine quarters since 1997 with more than 100 consumer product recalls.
However, the search results do not contain specific information about which organization issued the most food recalls in Q2 2023.
In conclusion, while the number of recall events in Q2 2023 was higher compared to the first quarter, the total number of units affected decreased significantly, indicating a possible shift towards smaller-scale recalls and earlier defect detection.
