US-Canada trade negotiations to be rekindled as Canada repeals digital services levy

Trump's trade talks with Canada hit a roadblock last week, with President Donnie boy scrapping negotiations due to Canada's new Digital Services Tax (DST). Now, life comes at ya fast, huh? But Canada's all about keeping things moving!

Over the weekend, our Northern neighbors announced they're backing off the DST to give talks another shot. In a statement on Sunday night, they said, "Hey, we're dropping the DST 'cause we want to make a sweet deal with the Yanks."

According to Canadian Finance Minister, François-Philippe Champagne, "This move is about getting back to the negotiating table and working towards a comprehensive trade arrangement with the U.S." He adds, "We're trashing the DST, but we're keeping our fingers crossed for a win-win situation."

The DST, a tax on online services, was set to kick in on Monday, retroactive to 2022. Trump's been calling it a "non-tariff trade barrier," claiming it's just another way for other countries to keep US companies down in the dirt.

With the DST out the picture, both sides have agreed to meet again, aiming to seal the deal by July 21, 2025. Let's hope this isn't just another game of trade ping-pong!

Canada and the U.S. have a pretty tight trading relationship, with Canada being the top buyer of American goods. Last year, they bought $349 billion worth of goods from the States, while shipping $413 billion worth of stuff northward. Keep an eye on this one – things are interesting again!
