US Bishops Condemn Trump's Immigration Policies and Budget Cuts
Bishops across the United States have been vocal in their criticism of the Trump administration's immigration policies and budget cuts. They have spoken out against ICE raids, refugee aid cuts, and the 2026 budget bill, warning of the impact on communities and the poor.
Archbishop William E. Lori condemned the administration's immigration raids, stating they eroded trust in communities. Archbishop John C. Wester of Santa Fe went further, warning that the budget bill, with its cuts to Medicaid payments for Planned Parenthood, would squander the church's credibility if not opposed.
Bishops from various states have raised concerns over deportation policies, including the deportation of non-criminals and family separation. Archbishop José H. Gomez condemned ICE raids in Los Angeles as 'punishment' with cruel and arbitrary outcomes. Despite their forceful statements, the bishops question whether all Catholics are hearing and understanding their messages.
The bishops have criticized the 2026 budget bill for slashing services to the poor while guaranteeing tax breaks for the rich. Archbishop Borys Gudziak emphasized that economic decisions must prioritize the poor in Catholic social teaching.
While bishops continue to speak out against policies they believe harm the poor and vulnerable, the effectiveness of their message remains uncertain. Over the last 20 years, the bishops have reduced their communication outlets, making it harder to reach Catholics. Those who stay connected, particularly through reform efforts like the Synodal Path in Germany, are more likely to hear and understand their bishops' statements.
