Urgent warning for Citroen vehicle owners: Stop operating your vehicles!

A large-scale recall has been issued for certain Citroen models, including the C3 and DS3 produced between 2009 and 2019, due to a severe safety issue involving Takata airbags. These airbags have the potential to violently rupture, sending metal shrapnel into the cabin, causing fatal injuries. This recall was initiated Europe-wide in June 2024 following a deadly incident in France.

The Current Situation

Owners of affected vehicles are being instructed to stop driving immediately due to the risk. Appointments for repairs to replace faulty airbags are proving difficult to secure, with reports of waiting times of 3-4 weeks or more due to parts shortages and high demand.

Stellantis, Citroen's parent company, is taking steps to expedite repairs, including performing them at home or at non-Citroen sites to reduce wait times.

Options for Affected Owners

Courtesy Cars

Dealerships' ability to provide courtesy vehicles varies. Many owners have reported limited availability, with dealerships unable to supply a car to everyone affected.

Travel Cost Reimbursement

Owners unable to drive their cars should keep records of travel expenses, such as train tickets or hired cars. While Stellantis has not publicly clarified a formal compensation policy, it appears to be considering reimbursement for reasonable travel costs incurred as a direct result of the recall.

For learner drivers, the DVSA has relaxed test refund policies due to the recall to accommodate those unable to take tests in affected cars.

Impacted Owners

Several affected owners have shared their stories. Julian Anderson, a retired man from Scotland, has been unable to drive his Citroen C3 for more than three weeks and has declared his car off the road with a SORN. T'anna Robertson, a sales assistant, is another customer who relies on her 2015 Citroen DS3 and is uncertain about the length of time her parents can provide transport.

Dawn Jane Johnstone, a clinical support worker for the NHS, is another DS3 owner who is significantly impacted by not being able to use her car due to the stop-drive order. Natasha Hayes, a pharmacy procurement office worker, has been refused a courtesy car by Citroen, the repairing dealership, and her insurer.

Sandra J, who works in design, has only recently returned to work after a serious illness and has been unable to use her DS3 due to the stop-drive order.

Stellantis Workshops' Support

Stellantis workshops, including Peugeot, are supporting repairs to expedite the process.

In summary, while affected owners must not drive their cars and urgently await a replacement airbag repair, courtesy car access is not guaranteed, and travel cost reimbursement is possible but not clearly defined yet. Owners are advised to persistently check with multiple dealers for earlier appointments and maintain thorough records of additional travel expenses for potential compensation claims.

  1. Affected car owners are advised to seek compensation for any travel expenses incurred as a direct result of the recall, although Stellantis has not yet publicly clarified a formal policy.
  2. In an effort to reduce wait times for repairs, Stellantis is arranging for faulty airbags to be replaced at home or non-Citroen sites, along with performing repairs at partner workshops, such as Peugeot.
  3. Owners of affected vehicles are being asked to stop driving immediately, with limited availability of courtesy vehicles from dealerships causing frustration for many.
  4. The automotive industry, including finance, insurance, transportation, and lifestyle sectors, are closely monitoring the situation as concerns over car-maintenance and safety spill over to other Citroen models and potentially other brands.
