Urban Homes Approval Surges in PMAY-U 2.0, Prioritizing Women and Underprivileged Communities
Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana - Urban 2.0 (PMAY-U 2.0) Boosts Urban Housing Stock
The latest phase of the Housing for All initiative, Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana - Urban 2.0 (PMAY-U 2.0), has made significant strides in boosting urban housing stock, with over 93.81 lakh pucca houses already constructed and delivered.
During the fourth meeting of the Central Sanctioning and Monitoring Committee held on Tuesday, it was decided to construct over 3.53 lakh houses, with a strong focus on women's empowerment. Specifically, over 2.67 lakh houses have been approved for women beneficiaries, including single women and widows.
The scheme, initially launched as 'Housing for All' and later revamped and relaunched as PMAY-U 2.0 in September 2024, targets diverse vulnerable groups. Eligible beneficiaries belong to urban Economically Weaker Sections (EWS), Low Income Group (LIG), and Middle Income Group (MIG) categories and should not own a pucca house anywhere in India.
Key features of PMAY-U 2.0 include provisions for women's empowerment, with houses allotted primarily in the name of women to boost economic independence. Beneficiaries receive central assistance of ₹2.50 lakh per housing unit. The overall government funding under PMAY-U 2.0 is around ₹2.30 lakh crore, with an estimated total investment of ₹10 lakh crore targeting one crore urban poor and middle-class families over five years.
The scheme is implemented through four verticals—Beneficiary Led Construction (BLC), Affordable Housing in Partnership (AHP), Affordable Rental Housing (ARH), and Interest Subsidy Scheme (ISS). All houses under PMAY-U 2.0 come with fundamental amenities such as water supply, kitchen, electricity, and toilet facilities.
The meeting was chaired by Housing and Urban Affairs Secretary Srinivas Katikithala, who urged states and UTs to strategically plan and locate housing projects in areas with enhanced connectivity, economic activity, and better access to services. He also suggested aligning housing projects with infrastructure corridors to promote integrated urban development.
States and UTs that have approved houses under PMAY-U 2.0 include Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Ladakh, Madhya Pradesh, Manipur, Maharashtra, Mizoram, Odisha, Puducherry, Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Tripura, Uttarakhand, and Uttar Pradesh. Notably, Uttar Pradesh has sanctioned 1,166 houses for senior citizens, and 12 houses have been allotted to transgenders under the scheme.
Moreover, about 75,417 houses have been sanctioned for women alone, including single women and widows. Over 120 lakh houses have been sanctioned under PMAY-U 2.0, aiming to cater to the housing needs of the urban poor and provide access to affordable and dignified pucca houses with basic amenities.
Beneficiaries can apply for the Scheme directly through https://pmay-urban.gov.in/ or contact their Urban Local Body (ULB) for assistance. The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs has approved 1,46,582 pucca houses under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban 2.0.
