Traffic users in Hamburg should be aware of several upcoming changes affecting their journeys. This brief guide summarises the disruptions to S-Bahn line S2, the Elbgaustraße reconstruction, and the Ironman Hamburg event.
S-Bahn Line S2 Closure and Alternative Arrangements
Currently, the S-Bahn line S2 towards Bergedorf is closed due to maintenance work, with no trains running between Berliner Tor and Billwerder-Moorfleet until June 1. Passengers can make use of replacement buses during this period.
An Extra Bus Between Berliner Tor and Bergedorf
To assist commuters, an additional direct bus will run between Berliner Tor and Bergedorf for the duration of the S-Bahn closure. The remaining stretch of the S2 line will still operate, but with trains running only every ten minutes, so passengers are advised to allow extra travel time.
Ironman Hamburg: Sunday Service Adjustments
On Sunday, June 1, traffic arrangements will be further affected by the Ironman Hamburg event. Between 6 am and 6 pm, replacement buses will not follow their usual route but will run via the U-Bahn station Burgstraße, which means the stops Tiefstack and Rothenburgsort will not be served that day.
Elbgaustraße Reconstruction Begins
A significant construction project has commenced on Elbgaustraße in Eidelstedt, with the street set to be transformed into a modern traffic axis for all users over the next two years. Expect changes to pedestrian, cyclist, and vehicle routes, as well as renovations to the road surface and improvements to pedestrian facilities.
Car Drivers: Prepare for Traffic Congestion
The first phase of the Elbgaustraße construction runs from May 29 and is expected to last until just before Christmas. Car drivers should expect one-way traffic through the construction site and be rerouted via Schnackenburgallee and Kieler Straße. Cyclists can choose alternate routes via side streets, while pedestrians can pass through the construction site barrier-free. The bus traffic will also be adjusted to accommodate the works.
