Unveiling of new information:
In the heart of Germany, the city of Mannheim is making significant strides towards a greener, cleaner, and healthier future. The family-owned company, TBS Transportbeton GmbH & Co. KG, based in Mannheim, has developed a new concrete that generates fewer CO2 emissions during production.
Managing Director Joachim Gilles of TBS Beton stated that innovation is possible, even as the smallest cement company in Germany. This groundbreaking development is a testament to the city's commitment to sustainability and innovation.
Mannheim's Local Green Deal, designated as the pilot city for this initiative in Germany since July 2021, is a comprehensive approach to making the city greener, cleaner, and healthier. The city is collaborating with the local community, citizens, politics, economy, and research in eight specific action fields for concrete initiatives.
The Local Green Deal Team of the city of Mannheim supported TBS Transportbeton GmbH & Co. KG in obtaining approval for the new building material. Thanks to an adjustment of the technical building regulations in Baden-Württemberg, the climate-friendly concrete can now be officially used.
Several larger construction projects have already been implemented with the CO2-reduced cement, resulting in a noticeable reduction in CO2 emissions. For an average single-family house, around 100 cubic meters of concrete are needed, which means that up to 19 tonnes of CO2 can be saved compared to conventional concrete.
The city of Mannheim aims to be climate-neutral by 2030 with its Local Green Deal. This ambitious goal includes the use of CO2-reduced building materials as an important building block for achieving climate goals in the construction sector without losing sight of the affordability of housing.
Ongoing research projects, such as those in cooperation with the University of the German Armed Forces Munich and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), are expected to enable further procedures for more climate protection in the construction industry in the future.
