UK Tech Start-up Viridi Launches CO2-Based Cleaning Ingredient
UK-based tech start-up Viridi has made a significant stride in sustainable cleaning products. The company has launched Vireya, a key ingredient for soaps and cleaners, using captured carbon dioxide as its primary feedstock.
Viridi's innovative technology converts manufacturers' captured CO2 into a usable raw material, enabling them to produce a surfactant directly derived from carbon dioxide emissions. The process employs a solid, reusable catalyst, making it easy to integrate into existing manufacturing infrastructure.
Early assessments indicate that using Viridi's technology can reduce product carbon footprint by up to 70%. Vireya, the company's surface active agent, allows water molecules to spread more evenly, enhancing penetration and rinsing. This makes it an effective ingredient in products such as soaps, shampoos, and cleaners, replacing oil palm-derived feedstocks typically used to make sodium laureth sulphate (SLS).
Viridi secured £3m in seed-funding in 2023 to accelerate the development and commercialisation of its technology. The company is targeting a commercial release for 2026, having already licensed the technology to surfactant manufacturers. This allows companies to decarbonise quickly and stay ahead of tightening regulations without the need to build new plants.
Viridi's Vireya offers a sustainable solution for cleaning product manufacturers, reducing their carbon footprint and avoiding the use of oil palm-derived feedstocks. With commercial release planned for 2026, the technology promises a swift and efficient path to decarbonisation for the industry.
