U.S. expansion for Italdesign as they set up operations in Metro Detroit
Italdesign Establishes U.S. Headquarters in Bloomfield Township
Italdesign, a renowned Italian design house under the Volkswagen Group, is set to establish its U.S. headquarters in Bloomfield Township, Michigan. This move is expected to bring more than $20 million in investment to the state and create at least 24 jobs.
The decision to locate the U.S. headquarters in Bloomfield Township was not made lightly. Italdesign considered sites in California and Ohio before choosing Michigan. The plans indicate the company's intention to expand its presence and influence in the North American automotive market.
The U.S. headquarters, named Italdesign USA, was established in early 2024 and will be led by Fabrizio Mina. This subsidiary is expected to build closer ties with various local auto industry players, such as major automakers, suppliers, engineering firms, and companies specializing in testing and validation.
Italdesign has a rich history, having been founded in 1968 as Italdesign Giugiaro. Over the years, the company has made a name for itself by designing iconic vehicles for various automakers. In recent years, Italdesign has even started selling low-volume cars under its own brand.
At the 2025 CES event in Las Vegas, Italdesign presented its Quintessenza GT concept, showcasing its design prowess and technological innovation. The company's decision to establish a U.S. branch near Detroit is a testament to its commitment to the North American automotive market.
It's worth noting that Giorgetto Giugiaro, one of the founders of Italdesign, left the company in 2015 to start the rival design company GFG Style with his son Fabrizio. However, Italdesign remains a formidable force in the industry, with the VW Group taking control of the company in 2010.
As Italdesign USA settles into its new home in Bloomfield Township, it promises to bring innovation, design, and investment to the greater Metro Detroit area. The automotive industry can look forward to exciting developments as Italdesign continues to make its mark on the North American market.
