Berlin's Nollendorfplatz U-Bahn Station to Close for Four Months

Berlin's Nollendorfplatz U-Bahn station, a crucial intersection point for the city's underground network, will close for four months starting from January 2026. The closure is necessary due to the deteriorating condition of the tunnel ceiling, a problem that has worsened since it was first identified.

The repair works, scheduled to take place from January to April, will cause major disruption to Berlin's underground network. Four separate underground lines intersect at Nollendorfplatz station: U1, U2, U3, and U4. During the closure, only the above-ground U2 line will run normally. Train service will be "completely suspended" at Nollendorfplatz for three of the four lines (U1, U2, and U4).

The Berlin Senate and BVG (Berlin’s public transport operator) have planned alternative transportation options to mitigate the inconvenience. Travelers are advised to use nearby U-Bahn stations on intersecting or parallel lines to bypass Nollendorfplatz. Utilizing S-Bahn lines where applicable, as Berlin’s integrated transit system allows transfers between U-Bahn and S-Bahn, is also recommended. Relying on bus and tram services, which often increase frequency or add special routes to cover closed underground sections during extended shutdowns, is another option.

In addition, considering walking or cycling on short distances within Schöneberg and surrounding neighborhoods, which are well connected, could be a viable alternative. For precise route adjustments and service updates, travelers should consult BVG announcements or transit apps during the closure period.

The BVG has already taken steps to ensure the safety of passengers and workers. A reduced speed limit of 15 km/h for all trains passing through the station and the installation of steel supports and wooden beams to reinforce the structure are part of the measures taken. Back in 2021, the BVG gave the ceiling of the U1 line a condition grade of 3.2, considered "satisfactory". However, the rapid deterioration of the tunnel ceiling necessitated the closure for four months.

It is worth noting that from a grade of 4.0 onwards, a tunnel or bridge must be closed immediately due to the risk of collapse. The condition of the ceiling at Nollendorfplatz U-Bahn station has worsened since then, necessitating the closure for four months and marking the most significant restriction to Berlin's underground network in decades. The repair works at Nollendorfplatz station are expected to have a significant impact on Berlin's public transportation system.

  1. The repair works on Berlin's Nollendorfplatz U-Bahn station, due to start in January 2026, are expected to affect the finance sector, as the closure will cause major disruptions to the city's public-transit system, challenging commuters and businesses that rely on transportation.
  2. To handle the closures of four underground lines (U1, U2, U4) at Berlin's Nollendorfplatz station, the Berlin Senate and BVG have proposed utilizing alternative transportation methods, including S-Bahn lines, bus and tram services, walking, cycling, and nearby U-Bahn stations, demonstrating an emphasis on maintaining the industry's function through creative solutions.
