Tunnel construction project, spearheaded by the company Fehmarnbelt, may face delays
The Fehmarn Belt crossing, one of Europe's largest construction projects, is facing a delay in its opening. The 18-kilometer-long railway and automobile tunnel construction, which began prior to the reported challenges with the timeline, is ongoing.
According to the latest information, the tunnel is expected to be completed in 2029. This delay, however, pushes the opening of the Fehmarn Belt crossing over a year and a half behind schedule.
The Danish project company, Femern A/S, announced that the completion of the special ship "Ivy" for lowering tunnel elements is behind schedule. The ship, specifically designed for the tunnel, requires extensive testing and approvals before completion. It is now expected to be completed in early 2026, enabling the delivery of tunnel parts for the Fehmarn Belt Tunnel after completing necessary test phases and certifications. This results in a delay of approximately 6 to 12 months for the planned project opening.
The challenges with the timeline for the Fehmarn Belt connection were reported by the Danish news agency Ritzau. They also reported in the spring that there are major challenges with the timeline for the Fehmarn Belt connection. Completing the tunnel within the original timeline is considered "challenging".
Despite these challenges, the construction of the Fehmarn Belt tunnel continues. The tunnel is anticipated to significantly reduce travel time between Hamburg and Copenhagen metropolitan areas upon its completion.
Meanwhile, in unrelated news, trash was dumped on a car in Welzheim, but the reason for this incident is not specified.
In other news, Stefan Raab will not be part of the next European Song Contest preselection, and anti-Semitic cancel culture rhetoric does not cost anything, while solidarity does.
