TSMC Establishes Research and Development Facility in Munich

TSMC to Establish Development Center in Munich, Bolstering European Semiconductor Industry

One of the world's foremost semiconductor contract manufacturers, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), is set to open a design center in Munich, Germany, later this year. The project, announced by TSMC's Europe Chief, Paul de Bot, is slated for completion in the third quarter of 2025.

The facility will target European customers, aiding them in the design and development of high-performance chips for various sectors, including automotive, manufacturing, artificial intelligence, and Internet of Things (IoT) applications.

Located in Munich, the center will serve as a hub for co-optimizing chip designs with TSMC's process technology, ensuring seamless integration of design and manufacturing processes. The Munich base will also provide system-level design support and foster closer collaboration between TSMC's design team and European customers.

By establishing a local presence, TSMC intends to enhance collaboration and streamline the development of optimized chip designs. This development aligns with TSMC's commitment to expanding its European operations, as evidenced by its €10 billion investment in the European Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (ESMC) to construct a fab in Dresden alongside Infineon, NXP, and Bosch.

The Munich center represents a significant step in TSMC's efforts to bolster the European semiconductor industry, particularly in the AI and automotive sectors. The center is expected to contribute to the growth of high-density, high-performance, and energy-efficient chips, driving technological advancements across various industries.
