Trolley tunnel under Schuylkill River receives crucial track maintenance by SEPTA
The Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) has completed a significant 30-day closure of its trolley tunnel under the Schuylkill River, marking a crucial step in the transformation of its light-rail system into a 21st-century transit network.
During the closure from July 11 to August 11, 2025, SEPTA carried out extensive work to modernize and improve the system. This included the replacement of worn track and overhead contact wire, upgrades to the electric system for ADA compliance, maintenance on the entire tunnel signal system, and intensive maintenance work on select switches.
One of the key contributions of the closure was the preparation for new, fully-accessible trolleys that comply with ADA requirements. As part of this, SEPTA has implemented changes at 19th Street Station and 22nd Street Station to accommodate a tapping system for boarding the trolley. Customers will now tap when boarding the trolley at these stations, and the stations no longer have farelines/turnstiles.
In addition to these changes, SEPTA has also improved the customer experience by cleaning platforms, clearing drains, removing graffiti, painting, and performing lighting upgrades on the trolley tunnel. The agency has also made modifications to the 19th Street Station and 22nd Street Station to accommodate the tapping system for boarding the trolley.
The trolley modernization project is a key part of SEPTA's plan to create a seamless transit network. The improvements aim to enhance transit accessibility, capacity, and reliability, making it easier and more convenient for customers to travel.
