Transformed from Dropping Out of School to Thriving Entrepreneur: The Journey of a Window Cleaner Reaching Six-Figure Sales
In 2007, Kyle Ray quit his 9-to-5 office job and embarked on a new venture – a window cleaning business. Naming it Geek Window Cleaning, he started with a single client, a massage studio in a shopping mall in Houston, Texas.
Ray's business began to grow, and in 2009, he launched the "Always Clean Program" (ACP). This innovative programme put customers on an automatic cleaning schedule, with prices based on the services chosen, house size, and cleaning frequency.
Ray's success didn't come easily. He initially struggled to win residential clients, but he continued to focus on them due to their potential value. His persistence paid off, and his first residential job earned him approximately $300 (255 euros).
To set himself apart from competitors, Ray implemented a unique pricing model and "irrational hospitality." He trained his employees to go above and beyond in customer service, picking up trash cans and cleaning items as a standard practice. This approach, combined with excellent customer service, helped Ray's business reach a six-figure income.
In 2014, Ray began using SEO strategically and rethought his pricing structure. He introduced a discount for customers who paid a monthly fee for a set number of cleanings. This move proved beneficial, and Geeks achieved a six-figure revenue in 2024 and is on track to surpass 1 million dollars (851,000 euros) in revenue for the first time in 2025.
Ray believes that maintenance programs are the future of window cleaning. With teams of technicians in Houston and Austin, and plans to expand to Dallas by 2027, he aims to reach 40 million dollars (34 million euros) in annual revenue in five years and 100 million dollars (85 million euros) in ten years, with plans to expand nationwide.
Residential window cleaning requires more skill than commercial window cleaning due to smaller windows, screen doors, and multi-story houses. Ray, who initially worked for a window cleaning company to refine his skills, has mastered this art. His commitment to excellence, unparalleled customer service, and strategic business decisions have made Geek Window Cleaning a household name in Texas.
