Train Derailment in Riedlingen: Three Dead, 41 Injured

A tragic train derailment occurred in Riedlingen, Baden-Württemberg, on [insert date], due to a landslide caused by heavy rain. The accident resulted in the deaths of three individuals, including a 32-year-old train driver, a 36-year-old trainee, and a 70-year-old passenger, and left 41 others injured, some seriously.

The RE 55 regional express train was passing through the area when it struck a mass of earth that had been displaced by a landslide. The first carriage derailed, climbed up the slope, and crashed into a tree, with the front being torn off. The number of passengers on the train is initially unclear, but it is believed to be lower than 100.

Local farmer Johannes Figel was one of the first on the scene and helped with rescue efforts. Debris such as bodywork and seats were scattered on the ground, with the train wagons intertwined and scattered across the tracks.

Investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the landslide. However, it is believed that an overflowing sewer shaft due to heavy rain in the area may have played a critical role in the earth mass collapsing towards the railway.

Bahn CEO Richard Lutz found the images of the accident distressing, while Federal Transport Minister Patrick Schnieder described the scene as shocking. Baden-Württemberg's Minister President Winfried Kretschmann thanked the rescue services for their quick response and efforts.

Clearance of the site is expected to take until Tuesday morning, with a special crane being used for the operation. After clearance, an expert team will inspect the track for precise damage. The extent of the track closure cannot be estimated until the expert team's inspection.

The accident has raised concerns about infrastructure maintenance and safety in areas prone to heavy rain and flooding. In June 2024, two carriages of an ICE derailed near Schwäbisch Gmünd after a landslide, but no one was injured at the time.

Replacement traffic by bus is currently in place while the railway line remains closed. The data recorder from the train has been removed and investigations are ongoing to fully document the sequence of events.

Our thoughts are with the families and friends of those affected by this tragedy.
