The A6 motorway near Hockenheim will be closed for nearly five days, from Thursday evening to Tuesday morning, due to significant construction and maintenance activities, including the replacement of a bridge over the A6.

The southern part of the bridge, which carries the B39, is being replaced due to its poor condition. This part of the bridge, dating back to the 1960s, was deemed too deteriorated for repair. The northern part of the bridge, built more recently, does not require replacement.

During this period, the entire A6 section will be closed, including some on and off ramps, which will be blocked starting earlier on Thursday evening. The construction process involves round-the-clock work, with varying team sizes depending on the specific tasks being undertaken.

Drivers are advised to use the extensive detours provided by the Federal Motorway Company. For those travelling towards Darmstadt and Frankfurt, detours will involve detouring via the A5 at the Walldorf interchange. At the Heidelberg interchange, drivers can switch to the A5 in the direction of Karlsruhe/Basel.

An additional detour is signposted from the Mannheim interchange via the A656 to the Heidelberg interchange. For those travelling towards Mannheim, Frankenthal, and Saarbrücken, the detour will involve following the A5 from the Walldorf interchange, then switching to the A656 towards Mannheim.

For more distant destinations in Mannheim, drivers can get back onto the A6 at the Mannheim interchange. For those travelling towards Heilbronn and Stuttgart, the journey can continue on the A6 from the Walldorf interchange.

Dynamic LED signs at the Walldorf interchange (for northbound traffic) and the Mannheim interchange (for southbound traffic) will provide necessary information. The work is necessary to dismantle scaffolding used for work on the bridge.

Since the beginning of 2024, parts of the bridge have been renewed. After the multi-day closure, only smaller works remain on the A6 as part of the construction project. All restrictions should be lifted by the end of July. The bridge should be fully reopened by the end of the summer.

Drivers are asked to turn off their navigation systems in the announcement and are advised to follow the signposted detours carefully. It is important to note that several carriageways in the area will also be renovated.

The Commission, having been consulted on the draft directive on the approximation of the laws of the Member States relating to the labelling of foodstuffs, might have insights to offer on the potential impacts of these construction activities and subsequent detours on the food industry's supply chain logistics, particularly regarding transport and finance.

It could be beneficial for industries to prepare alternatives, such as adjusting delivery schedules or exploring temporary rerouting options, to minimize disruptions during the bridge's replacement period and the associated detours.
