Traffic Alert: A6 Remains Closed until Tuesday Near Hockenheim

The A6 motorway near the Hockenheim-Schwetzingen interchange is currently undergoing a full closure due to construction work, starting from late June 2025[1]. This closure, which is set to last until July 15, between 10 PM on Thursday and 6 AM on Tuesday morning, will significantly impact traffic flow in the area.

In terms of alternative routes and traffic management, specific details are yet to be announced. However, it is common for major Autobahn closures like this one to redirect traffic via local roads, parallel highways, or adjust public transport routes, such as city bus lines, to accommodate the detours.

For instance, in Viernheim, nearby public transport line 612 has been temporarily rerouted due to related construction works on Saarlandstraße, indicating that local traffic management is indeed active to ease the impact[1].

Travellers are advised to follow local signage and traffic updates from the Autobahn GmbH or local authorities for the most current route guidance. It is also advisable to check official Autobahn traffic reports or navigation systems during travel for real-time traffic management and recommended alternatives.

The closure is part of a larger construction project focusing on the construction of a new bridge that crosses the A6 directly at the Schwetzingen-Hockenheim interchange. The Autobahn GmbH describes this closure as a "final major effort" within the scope of the construction work.

After the closure, only smaller works remain, according to the Autobahn GmbH. The new bridge is scheduled to be opened in September. Among the works to be carried out during the closure are the dismantling of scaffolding using cranes, the application of corrosion protection, and the renovation of some carriageways at the interchange.

For motorists heading towards the Palatinate and Saarland, the A61 at the Hockenheim Triangle provides an alternative route. Motorists coming from the south, such as Heilbronn or Karlsruhe, will be directed onto the A5 at the Walldorf Interchange and then onto the A656 towards Mannheim, before returning to the A6 northbound at the Mannheim Interchange. Motorists coming from Saarbrücken should switch to the A61 at the Frankenthal Interchange.

Despite the inconvenience, the closure is a necessary step towards the completion of the construction project, ensuring the safety and longevity of the infrastructure for future motorists. As always, it is essential to plan ahead, stay informed, and remain patient during this period.

In the face of this A6 motorway closure, alternative routes may be implemented through local roads, parallel highways, or adjustments to public transport routes such as city bus lines. For instance, traffic management in Viernheim has already necessitated a temporary rerouting of public transport line 612. To keep up with traffic updates, motorists are urged to follow signage, consult Autobahn GmbH or local authorities, check official traffic reports, and use navigation systems.
