Dirty City Slicker: The Toyota Urban Cruiser AWD gets gritty with off-road prowess

Toyota's Urban Cruiser All-Wheel Drive model performs admirably during exits.

The Toyota Urban Cruiser isn't just a pretty city face—this electric compact SUV packs a punch off-road with powerful drivetrains, all-wheel drive, and even handles light off-road excursions with ease.

Toyota is diving headfirst into the B-segment competition with the electric Urban Cruiser, partnering with Suzuki to develop this rugged powerhouse. Sharing its technical base with the identical eVitara, the Urban Cruiser boasts two front-wheel drive variants producing 106 kW/144 PS and 128 kW/174 PS respectively, topped by an all-wheel drive version with a whopping 135 kW/184 PS. This electric SUV can be yours for around €30,000 and is expected to roll out in the second half of the year.

With its bold front end, LED daytime running lights, and protective black plastic underbody, the Urban Cruiser exudes confidence from every angle. Inside, the clear layout and modern cockpit provide all the essential info at a glance, while the combination of classic controls and touchscreen is a welcome throwback to simpler times. Though the off-road appearance may seem extreme for a compact SUV, the AWD version has hidden talents that can help it conquer unforgiving terrain.

The front-wheel-drive variants are equipped with a motor at the front axle boasting 193 Newton meters of torque each. The entry-level model features a 49 kWh battery, offering up to 344 kilometers according to WLTP. The larger brother with 144 PS backs a 61 kWh battery for an impressive 426 kilometers on a full charge.

The star of the show, the all-wheel-drive variant, adds an electric motor on the rear axle for a total torque of 307 Newton meters, shaving off an impressive 7.4 seconds for the 0-100 km/h sprint. Interestingly, Toyota uses lithium iron phosphate cells for both battery sizes, which may sacrifice energy density but are more cost-effective compared to conventional lithium-ion technologies.

Slipping behind the wheel of the top all-wheel-drive model uncovers a delightful driving experience—quiet, agile, and confident, making city navigation a breeze. However, the firm suspension and wind noise at highway speeds can put a damper on the journey.

The interior is functional and slick, complete with a mix of classic buttons and touch controls, as well as modern connectivity standards and built-in navigation. Comfortable and robust driver's seats offer long-term support, while the 310-liter trunk provides plenty of room for gear. But Toyota isn't content to rest on its laurels—a sliding rear bench and folding rear backrests create additional versatility for when passengers require more legroom or cargo space sacrifices are necessary.

The Urban Cruiser's true mettle shines during off-road escapades. With gravel roads and rugged terrain, this electric compact SUV performs surprising feats of agility and adaptability. The AWD model's transitions between traction modes are seamless, making it a versatile option for anyone living in snowy regions or considering forestry work. However, the cost of an AWD model punching above its weight—at least €42,990 in Germany—might be a deal-breaker for some.

But there's more—the Urban Cruiser AWD packs some impressive off-road credentials, such as Trail Mode, which helps manage wheel spin and improve off-road capability and stability. Downhill Assist Control (Hill Descent Control) offers enhanced stability and controlled speed during steep descents, and the two front-wheel drive models benefit from Snow Mode, a consideration for even more challenging winter conditions. The Urban Cruiser AWD also includes a 48 kW rear motor for improved traction and stability, along with a 360-degree camera system for improved visibility.

All in all, the Toyota Urban Cruiser AWD is a versatile, adaptable, and off-road-ready electric compact SUV, packing the power and capabilities to tackle everything from city streets to the backcountry.
