Tourists visiting Hawaii urged to contribute to a climate tax.

Hawaii Governor Josh Green has announced plans for a climate fee on tourists to fund projects that protect nature and combat climate change, starting in 2026. This new "Green Fee" is expected to generate approximately $100 million annually.

Hoteliers in Hawaii are voicing concerns over the financial impact, as the existing traveler tax will increase by 0.75% from January 1, 2026, causing an additional cost for tourists. Overnight stays on cruise ships will also be taxed for the first time.

The tax is a reaction to the catastrophic wildfires on Maui about two years ago that destroyed parts of the island, causing more than 100 casualties. Scientists warn that climate change increases the likelihood of extreme weather events, such as storms, floods, and fires.

The tourism industry is showing support for the initiative, acknowledging the importance of environmental protection and sustainable tourism practices. However, industry leaders remain concerned about the potential increased costs for visitors, which could reduce spending on other activities and services in Hawaii.

Carl Bonham of the University of Hawaii stated that a small increase in accommodation tax might not discourage tourists from choosing Hawaii as their travel destination, but it could lead to reduced spending on restaurants and excursions.

With around 10 million visitors in 2023, the economic impact of the fee remains to be seen. The law includes provisions for formal oversight and a recurring budget process to ensure the effective use of the generated funds.

By focusing on environmental protection, Hawaii aims to promote sustainable tourism practices, potentially attracting more eco-conscious visitors and enhancing the state's long-term economic stability. The state is also setting a precedent for other states and countries to consider similar measures.

  1. The community policy, shaped by the new climate fee, emphasizes the importance of environmental-science and tackling climate-change to protect nature and combat its effects.
  2. The finance department's employment policy should focus on studying the economic impact of the Green Fee on businesses, such as hoteliers and the tourism industry, to ensure sustainable and responsible practices.
  3. Given the potential consequences of climate-change on extreme weather events, such as wildfires, the employment policy in environmental-science should be strengthened to provide accurate forecasts and urge preventive measures.
