Title: Two Companies Secure Catering Deals at Europe's Monumental Aviation Development
Frankfurt Airport's sixth busiest operator has awarded contracts for its new terminal's food and beverage outlets to two heavyweights in the travel retail industry: Avolta and Lagardère Travel Retail. Fraport, the German firm responsible for Frankfurt Airport (a Lufthansa hub), is constructing the substantial Terminal 3 at a cost of approximately €4 billion ($4.2 billion), with completion projected for the 2026 summer flight schedule.
Fraport has assigned 22 dining spaces—spanning over 30,000 square feet and boasting 990 seats—to these industry giants, following a stringent selection process. Anke Giesen, Fraport's executive director for retail and real estate, appreciates both companies' innovative spirits and stringent quality standards, confident they'll significantly enrich the terminal's culinary offerings.
Frankfurt Airport is seeking to cater to an international passenger demographic, with a diverse range of dining options, trendy concepts, and local highlights. To entice these globetrotters, Fraport's partner, Avolta, plans to introduce the Sophia Loren Restaurant, a tribute to the iconic Italian actress, and Brot.by Axel Schmitt, a renowned German baker and metalhead, whose expertise will breathe new life into the terminal's baked goods, showcasing Germany's enormous pride in its bread culture.
Lagardère Travel Retail, the other chosen operator, has its sights set on Neni Deli, a concept inspired by Tel Aviv's vibrant culinary scene, offering Levantine and Mediterranean cuisine exclusively tailored for the airport. Haferkater, an ode to porridge aficionados, will offer both sweet and savory options using freshly ground oats, directly from controlled German cultivations.
Once the selection process is complete, a grand total of 65 retail spaces covering about 130,000 square feet will have been assigned, according to Fraport. With an anticipated influx of international passengers in Terminal 3, Giesen commented, "We are designing it to provide an exceptional experience."

The terminal's non-Schengen area will also feature an expansive duty-free offer, specializing in luxury and premium concepts to capture the interest of international travelers with substantial spending power.
Dining options will cater to various preferences, ranging from high-end fine dining establishments like the Sophia Loren Restaurant to more accessible quick-service options such as Burger King. This diverse selection aligns with the growth of Frankfurt Airport, which processed 61.6 million passengers in 2022, witnessing a 3.7% increase, albeit at a fraction of Munich Airport's 12.2% growth.
Frankfurt's retailers and management can celebrate positive developments, with retail revenue experiencing a 7% surge in during Q3 2024, and passenger expenditure climbing by 4% to €3.02, surpassing pre-pandemic Q3 2019 figures.
