Thousands of Irish Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) receive support from the National Enterprise Hub within its inaugural year
The National Enterprise Hub, launched by the Department of Enterprise, Tourism and Employment and Enterprise Ireland, is making it easier for businesses across various sectors to access essential information and government supports. Over 6,500 SMEs have been directly supported by the Hub in its first year, with businesses from industries such as Tourism & Hospitality, retail & consumer products, food, health & beauty, professional services, and construction benefitting from the initiative.
The Hub's website has attracted over 220,000 active online users in the last 12 months, demonstrating its growing popularity among businesses. The Minister for Enterprise, Tourism and Employment, Peter Burke, has stated that the Hub has proven effective in streamlining and simplifying access for SMEs to government supports.
The grants offered by the National Enterprise Hub range in value from €3,000 to €7,000, focusing on cashflow, expansion, and productivity. These grants are designed to help businesses deal with concerns around rising costs and competitiveness, especially in a complex business environment. The top grants availed of by businesses through the National Enterprise Hub are primarily in this value range.
Conor O'Donovan, Head of Start-Ups and the National Enterprise Hub, reports that the Hub's main aim was to engage with businesses who haven't availed of government supports and to make the process easier. To this end, the Hub brings together information and resources on over 250 Government supports from 30 different departments and state agencies, providing a single source of government supports for businesses.
The Hub also offers a full-time dedicated phone line for business owners to discuss potential grant options. Mr. O'Donovan highlights that Irish SMEs are operating in a complex environment, and accessing grants and supports is more important than ever. To further facilitate enterprise growth, innovation, and regional development, a larger €3.68 billion funding package under Ireland’s National Development Plan (NDP) is being invested. This investment supports strategic sectors and advanced technology R&D, indirectly benefiting SMEs by strengthening the overall ecosystem.
Key grant schemes promoted by the NEH to support SMEs include the LEO’s Energy Efficiency Grant and the SEAI’s Business Energy Upgrade Scheme, which help businesses reduce costs related to energy and sustainability. These grants focus on supporting businesses with cashflow, expansion, and productivity, with a particular focus on sustainability and digital transformation.
In conclusion, the National Enterprise Hub is proving to be a valuable resource for Irish SMEs, providing simplified access to government supports, grants, funding, loans, and expert advice. The Hub's focus on reducing administrative burdens and simplifying grant applications, combined with its dedicated resources for digital and sustainability support, is helping businesses navigate economic challenges and stay competitive.
