Drift, an highly praised animated flick about a feline's journey through a monsoon-like deluge, hits digital streaming this week.
Drift hit select cinemas on Nov. 22. The film's synopsis goes, "Solitary by nature, a cat's habitat is ravaged by a colossal flood, forcing it to seek shelter on a multi-species boat. It'll need to overcome their differences to form alliances."
As per When to Stream, Drift will be available for premium digital rental on Tuesday, Jan. 7.
Drift's release date is confirmed by Prime Video, who claim it will be purchasable for $17.99 digitally.
Usually, newly released digital movies are rentable for $5 less than the purchase price, so viewers can likely rent Drift for $12.99 for a 48-hour period.
Drift will also be accessible on various digital platforms like AppleTV and VUDU.
Drift Has Been a Major Competitor This Awards Season
Directed by Latvian filmmaker Gints Zilbalodis, Drift has been warmly received by critics and awards committees.
Beyond being nominated for Best Animated Feature by both the Critics Choice Awards and Golden Globes, Drift scored a Best Animated Feature – Independent nod from the Annie Awards.
Additionally, Drift has been nominated for Best International Feature by the Film Independent Spirit Awards and was named Best European Animated Feature by the European Film Awards.
According to Box Office Mojo, Drift has made roughly $2.3 million domestically and $4.2 million internationally, amounting to a global box office revenue of $6.6 million. According to Fast Company, Drift had an estimated production budget of about $3.8 million, before post-production and promotional costs.
Rotten Tomatoes critics gave Drift a 97% "fresh" evaluation, based on 107 reviews. The RT Critics Consensus reads, "Thanks to its groundbreaking animation and mature themes, this Drift is remarkably compelling."
Likewise, Drift received a 94% "fresh" rating on RT's Audience Meter based on over 500 reviews.
In a Nov. 2024 interview with Fast Company, Zilbalodis mentioned that the Drift production team was relatively small compared to Hollywood standards—around 50 people—with only roughly 20 of them being part of the main team.
“Usually there were just two or three people, including me, in the studio, and in the first few years it was just me. It was a rather modest production, but it’s much larger than my previous film, which I made by myself,” Zilbalodis told Fast Company. “This was potentially 50 times more expensive in budget terms, but it’s actually 50 times smaller than most Disney films.”
Drift is rated PG and will be digitally purchasable on Tuesday.
