The Era of Grand Endeavors

Astana, the young capital of Kazakhstan, is rapidly transforming into one of the fastest-growing capitals in the world. The city's development over the next decade is focused on creating modern and affordable social infrastructure.

The revised General Plan for Astana outlines the main directions, which include the construction of schools, kindergartens, healthcare facilities, residential complexes, and various other facilities. By 2035, it is planned to construct 1,070 objects, including 138 schools, 190 kindergartens, 17 Palace of Schoolchildren, 705 housing fund objects, 207 educational institutions, 131 commercial objects, 61 healthcare objects, 52 administrative, 29 sports facilities, 74 recreational objects and infrastructure projects, 19 fire stations, and various other facilities.

One of the most significant expansions will be in the educational sector. By the 2025-2026 academic year, 83 new schools with 115,000 student places are planned to be commissioned, reflecting a major expansion in educational infrastructure. New healthcare centers are also being constructed, especially in villages that previously lacked such institutions, to provide medical services for about 1,000,000 rural residents.

The government is also heavily investing in residential housing development and the replacement of outdated buildings. By 2035, it is planned to demolish 731,500 square meters of dilapidated housing and construct nearly 30.5 million square meters of new housing. The project for the reconstruction of Astana's existing part and the demolition of dilapidated and hazardous housing involves constructing new residential complexes, with some provided to residents in exchange for demolished ones and some sold on the free market.

Urban planners in Astana have been guided by principles of compactness, polycentricity, and territorial balance. The largest number of objects will be built in 2026, totaling 402 objects, representing 31% of the total.

Alongside social infrastructure, there is substantial infrastructure investment covering energy, transportation, and digital technologies, which will indirectly support urban growth and quality of life in Astana by 2035.

The development plans in Astana are part of a nationwide modernization effort driven by the government since 2024-2025. By 2030, more than 1,300 new facilities are expected to appear in Astana, aligning with the city's vision for the future. The amended General Plan of the city of Astana by 2035 projects a housing fund of 68 million 250 thousand sq.m, with a housing provision of 30.0 sq.m per person.

The city's architecture has changed with each new development stage, with contributions from Kazakhstani and international architects, designers, and builders. Astana's development by 2035 is a testament to the city's commitment to progress and modernization, providing a better quality of life for its residents.

  1. To support the growth of Astana, the government is heavily investing in real-estate development, planning to demolish outdated buildings and construct nearly 30.5 million square meters of new housing by 2035.
  2. Alongside investments in social infrastructure and energy, transportation, and digital technologies, the city's development plans also include a significant focus on financing educational institutions, with 83 new schools planned by the 2025-2026 academic year.
