Thailand ascends to second-ranking pet food exporter globally, generating worth of 85 billion baht in 2024

In the bustling pet food market of 2024, Thailand emerged as a significant player, becoming the world's second-largest exporter of dog and cat food, with shipments valued at US$2.67 billion (85.03 billion baht). This impressive feat places Thailand just behind the United States, which led the global pet food export market with exports worth US$2.52 billion.

Poland followed closely, ranking as the third-largest pet food exporter, with exports valued at US$2.40 billion. France and Germany rounded off the top five, with exports valued at US$2.30 billion and US$2.43 billion, respectively.

The US, with its vast pet population, was the largest importer of pet food, taking in US$2.21 billion worth of imports. Germany, France, and Japan were not far behind, importing US$2.43 billion, US$2.30 billion, and US$1.69 billion, respectively.

Thailand's main export destination was the US, accounting for 32.4% of total shipments. Other major export markets included Japan, Australia, Italy, and Malaysia.

Rising pet ownership worldwide, driven by ageing populations, smaller households, and lifestyle changes among younger generations, is fuelling demand for pet food. This trend is evident in the growth of Thailand's pet food exports, which saw a 29% year-on-year increase in 2024.

In the first seven months of 2025, Thailand's pet food exports continued to soar, reaching US$1.68 billion, marking a 10.7% increase from the same period in the previous year. The US remained the top market for Thai pet food exports, with a 26% expansion in exports to this market. Germany, too, showed strong growth, with Thailand achieving its strongest exports of dog and cat food deliveries to Germany in the first half of 2025.

Thai manufacturers are well-positioned to capture demand for functional pet food, such as products for young, sick, or elderly pets, as well as health-focused and high-vitamin formulas. To maintain this competitive edge, Thai exporters are advised to focus on research and development, using more domestic raw materials, and innovating new health-focused products.

Eco-friendly packaging and sustainable production are expected to become important factors for competitiveness in the US, EU, Japan, China, and emerging markets in the Middle East and Eastern Europe. Thai exporters should take note of these trends and adapt their practices accordingly.

However, Thai exporters are not without challenges. Local content requirements pose a significant hurdle, and finding solutions to meet these demands while maintaining quality and international standards will be crucial for sustainable growth in the pet food industry.

The pet industry will gather in Bangkok from October 30 - November 1, as the International Pet Industry welcomes exhibitors and visitors at BITEC. This event promises to be a platform for Thai exporters to showcase their products, network with industry professionals, and forge partnerships that will drive the growth of the Thai pet food industry further.
