Tesla announces that the Model Y will be arriving in China shortly, providing a sneak peek at specifics
In a significant move, Tesla is set to launch the Model Y L, a longer and more spacious variant of its popular SUV, in China this fall. The Model Y L boasts an impressive 82 kWh LG NMC battery pack, delivering a CLTC range of 751 km (approx. 327 miles EPA range).
The Model Y L features a dual motor all-wheel-drive system, producing 142 kW at the front and 198 kW at the rear. With a top speed of 201 km/h and acceleration from 0 to 62 mph in 4.5 seconds, it offers a compelling driving experience. The SUV measures 4976 mm in length, 1920 mm in width, and 1668 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3040 mm, and weighs approximately 2,088 kg.
Key features of the Model Y L include a six-seat, three-row configuration, enhanced front seats with adjustable under-thigh support, heated and ventilated functions, and electric leg support. It also offers generous cargo space of 2,539 liters (89.6 cubic feet) and standard 19-inch wheels. Charging on Tesla's Supercharger network supports up to 250 kW.
The Model Y L is expected to appeal to families and those needing more space, as its extended range and size are poised to make it competitive in the Chinese EV market. However, its arrival comes at a time when the Model Y is facing challenges in China. Retail sales of the SUV have declined year-on-year in five of the first seven months this year.
Tesla's founder, William Li, has commented on Weibo about the arrival of the Model Y L intensifying competition in China's six-seat electric SUV market. Li Auto, another Chinese EV manufacturer, launched the Li i8 six-seat electric SUV on July 29 and will begin deliveries on August 20. Nio's sub-brand Onvo also launched the six-seat electric SUV L90 on July 31 and began deliveries the next day.
Li Auto's founder, Li X, has also commented on Weibo about the Model Y L being a six-seat electric SUV worthy of respect. The arrival of these new models is likely to heat up competition in the Chinese EV market, with each company vying for a share of the growing demand for electric vehicles.
