Taxis Now Required to Carry Guide Dogs, Balancing Service and Safety

Taxi services are now legally required to accommodate guide dogs and other assistance dogs, as per the Disability Equality Act. Drivers must swiftly decide whether to accept trips with dogs, balancing service against safety concerns.

Under the new regulation, drivers must not refuse trips due to fear or allergies, as this is considered discriminatory. However, not every vehicle or driver is suited for transporting large dogs, and a replacement vehicle may be needed. In such cases, passengers should inform the taxi company beforehand.

Most trips with dogs go smoothly if passengers follow the rules. They should specify the type of dog when ordering the taxi and ensure the dog is secured according to road traffic regulations. This means dogs cannot be on laps or across the back seat due to safety concerns. In case of an accident, both the owner and the driver will be held liable if the dog was not secured properly.

Unexpected animals or soiling can sometimes cause issues, but these are rare when passengers adhere to the guidelines.

While the transport of dogs in regular operation is not mandatory and each municipality sets its own rules, the Disability Equality Act ensures that guide dogs and other assistance dogs can accompany their owners in taxis. Drivers must make quick decisions, balancing service against safety, and passengers must follow the rules to ensure smooth and safe trips.
