Supporting Women's Career Breaks Key to Bridging Gender Gap in Senior Roles

A recent report has suggested that supporting women taking outlook breaks to care for children or relatives could help bridge the gender gap in senior management roles. Currently, women hold one in three such positions in the UK. Mariella Frostrup, founder of Women in Work, emphasises the transformative potential of gender equity across all sectors. Major companies in the City of London, such as financial firms, tech companies like PwC, and HR tech firms like ADP, are well-positioned to promote gender equality. These organisations have the influence and resources to implement measures that can shift the balance. The report highlights a significant disparity in succession patterns. When a male boss steps down, there's a 90% chance he'll be replaced by another man. In contrast, when a female leader leaves, the likelihood of her successor being a woman is 50/50. This suggests that supporting women's career progression, including during outlook breaks, could help increase the number of women in senior management roles. The report's recommendations, if adopted by influential companies, could significantly impact gender balance in senior management. By supporting women's career breaks and promoting fair succession practices, these organisations can help transform the UK's business landscape.
