Summer holiday railway disruptions and alternative traffic arrangements: Munich line resumes halt stops
Munich and Mühldorf passengers will experience a temporary switch from train to bus service during the summer holidays, as German Railways (DB) embarks on a crucial renovation project. The renovation involves replacing four mechanical signal boxes along the route with modern, electronic ones.
The switch will be in effect from August 11, 20.09 hours, to September 15, 07.11 hours. During this period, buses will run between Mühldorf and Munich Ost/Friedenstr., serving all intermediate stops.
For passengers travelling during this period, DB provides detailed timetables and bus replacement stops through its website, stations, and customer service. Passengers can stay informed with the Hallo Munich Newsletter or the Hallo Munich app.
Replacement bus services will be available, connecting Munich and Mühldorf directly or via intermediate stops. These buses are scheduled to coordinate with the usual train departure and arrival times as closely as possible.
In some cases, passengers might use other train lines that travel via a longer route to Mühldorf or nearby stations, with connections. Existing local or regional buses may also serve parts of the route, though ticketing integration and schedules can vary.
When public transport options are limited, some passengers may opt for car sharing, ridesharing, or taxis for direct travel.
It's worth noting that the first two new electronic signal boxes are expected to be operational by the end of 2025. The railway is replacing the last four mechanical signal boxes in two construction phases. The mechanical signal boxes in Hoerlkofen, Thann-Matzbach, Schwindegg, and Weidenbach will be taken off the network by 2027.
The affected train services are RE 4 and RB 40. Direct buses will run between Mühldorf, Ampfing, and Messestadt Ost (buses from Munich to Mühldorf only stop in Ampfing for exiting passengers). There are also direct buses between Dorfen and Messestadt Ost.
DB is responsible for the renovation of the signal boxes and for providing alternative travel arrangements during this period. The new timetables for bus travel between Munich and Mühldorf are yet to be announced.
Passengers are advised to check the latest updates shortly before their trip to ensure a smooth journey. The work will be bundled into a five-week period to keep the impact on passengers as low as possible.
This change in travel arrangement is expected to affect passengers travelling during the summer holidays. It's advisable to plan accordingly and consider the alternative travel options provided by DB.
- Due to the renovation project by German Railways (DB), passengers may need to switch from train to bus service along the route from Mühldorf to Munich during the summer holidays, affecting the RE 4 and RB 40 train services.
- Passengers can make financial adjustments as they plan their journeys during the summer holidays, as alternative transportation via buses will be available, coordinating closely with the usual train departure and arrival times, and perhaps requiring use of other train lines or local/regional buses, or even opting for car sharing, ridesharing, or taxis for direct travel.
