Suicide doors on the Genesis GV90 prototype indicate an imminent arrival of the feature.
The automotive world is abuzz with anticipation as Genesis prepares to enter the flagship full-size electric SUV market with the upcoming GV90. Scheduled for launch in the first quarter of 2026, this electric vehicle (EV) promises to redefine luxury, extend driving range, and introduce design elements that set it apart in its segment.
According to recent reports, the GV90 is expected to be priced in the low six-figures, reflecting its flagship and ultra-luxury status. This price point is likely to surpass the current Genesis G90 sedan’s starting price of about $94,000.
The GV90 will initially launch as an EV, with an Extended-Range Electric Vehicle (EREV) variant following in 2027. The EREV model will boast a driving range exceeding 700 miles (1,200 km) thanks to a combination of a battery-powered electric motor and a combustion engine acting solely as a generator.
One of the most intriguing features of the GV90 is the striking backwards-opening rear coach doors, also known as suicide doors. These innovative doors, previewed on initial prototypes and recently confirmed on production models spied in the US, underscore the GV90’s ultra-luxury positioning and set it apart in its segment.
The GV90 is expected to be a serious luxury vehicle, riding on the eM platform that supports 800-volt charging and Level 3 autonomous driving. It is rumoured to be gunning for the likes of the Rolls-Royce Cullinan.
Genesis' design boss, Sangyup Lee, has confirmed that reverse-hinged rear doors would come to one of the brand's cars "sooner or later." The GV90 prototype, spotted with backwards-opening rear coach doors, seems to be a strong contender for this design innovation.
As we eagerly await the official release of the GV90 next year, the automotive community looks forward to witnessing how Genesis will redefine luxury and innovation in the full-size electric SUV segment.
