Subway disturbance discussion scheduled by Bonde at a gathering
Berlin's persistent issues with its S-Bahn system are being addressed through a comprehensive strategy that encompasses digital modernization, infrastructure renewal, line expansions, and temporary mitigation measures during construction. This approach aims to enhance overall network reliability and capacity in the medium to long term.
The strategy is being implemented in response to recurring disruptions, which have led to significant restrictions on S-Bahn traffic on multiple lines. A team of experts has been working tirelessly to identify the possible causes of these issues, with defective signaling systems being one of the identified culprits.
Ute Bonde, Transport Senator of Berlin (CDU), has scheduled a meeting for Wednesday with representatives from S-Bahn Berlin GmbH and Deutsche Bahn AG to discuss these persistent issues and to ensure that a binding plan is presented to permanently resolve the disruptions. Ute Bonde expects the railway to guarantee that such problems will not recur in the future.
As part of the modernization efforts, a new digital dispatching system, introduced by Hitachi Rail and DB InfraGO in August 2025, aims to improve operational management and reduce disruptions. Additionally, major construction and refurbishment projects are underway, such as the extensive renovation of key lines like the Dresdner Bahn, and the opening of a new 16-kilometer line from Südkreuz to Blankenfelde in December 2025. This line improvement allows for better integration of S-Bahn, regional, and long-distance services, easing congestion on existing routes and improving scheduling flexibility.
Preliminary work is also underway for the reopening of the Siemensbahn branch from Jungfernheide to Gartenfeld by 2029, which serves new residential and research developments, and potential further line expansions are being studied to extend service coverage and reduce bottlenecks.
However, it should be noted that a "quick fix" for the problems is not expected, and some errors in the S-Bahn system are not reproducible, making it difficult to determine the reasons. The railway has not yet presented a binding plan to permanently resolve the disruptions, and the meeting on Wednesday is expected to address this issue.
The meeting was reported by RBB24's "Inforadio".
