Starting early October, Valley View Avenue will be closed for nearly four days from Artesia Boulevard to Alondra Boulevard due to retaining wall construction. Motorists are advised to find alternative routes during this period to avoid delays.
Joann Announces Store Closures Nationwide
In a significant retail shakeup, Joann, a popular craft and fabric store, has announced plans to close all of its remaining stores in 2025 following a second bankruptcy filing within one year. This includes all California locations, with some specific stores scheduled to close by April 2025.
The decision to close these stores is part of a broader shutdown of over 500 stores nationally, which was announced in February 2025. The final store closures are expected to occur by May 2025.
As of February 13, 2024, Joann's California stores are still operating but are slated to close throughout early 2025. Some of the stores with announced closing dates in California include Bakersfield Ming Retail Center (closing April 24, 2025), Eureka Harris Street (closing April 25, 2025), and Corte Madera on Tamal Vista Blvd. (closing date not specified).
Prior to these closures, Joann had already shuttered 255 locations and initiated going-out-of-business sales across remaining stores. By February 2024, the decision was firm to close all remaining locations, and the shutdown process is ongoing through 2025.
Sears to Close 19 Stores in California
Sears Holdings Corporation has announced the closure of 19 stores in California, including locations in several cities such as Bakersfield, Chico, Fresno, Long Beach, La Verne, Huntington Beach, Alhambra, La Canada, Lakewood, Torrance, Northridge, Buena Park, Irvine, Woodland Hills, Glendale, Fullerton, Santa Clarita, Orange, Foothill Ranch, Sherman Oaks, Turlock, Eureka, Sonora, Jackson, Oxnard, Simi Valley, Redding, Corona, Temecula, Redlands, Rancho Mirage, Hesperia, Riverside, Hemet, Chino, Sacramento, Woodland, Elk Grove, Folsom, Citrus Heights, Salinas, El Cerrito, San Diego, San Marcos, Corte Madera, San Mateo, Redwood City, Concord, El Cerrito, Dublin, San Leandro, Daly City, Cupertino, Morgan Hill, Santa Rosa, Rohnert Park, Manteca, Stockton, Vacaville, Yuba City.
Express to Close 95 Locations Nationwide
In another retail development, Express, a clothing retailer headquartered in Columbus, Ohio, has announced plans to close 95 locations nationwide. The closures include "underperforming stores," according to court documents. Going-out-of-business sales in the 96 stores (51 Sears and 45 Kmart) slated to close will begin on Dec 2.
JOANN Files for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy
On April 25, 2024, JOANN filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. As part of the Chapter 11 process, JOANN filed a motion on February 12, 2025, seeking court authority to begin closing approximately 500 stores nationwide. Transform Holdco disclosed the list of Sears and Kmart stores to close by the end of February.
