Spotify Accuses Apple of Blocking App Updates and Features
Spotify has accused Apple of blocking access to products and updates for their app. The music streaming giant claims it's being unfairly treated compared to other developers.
Spotify argues that it's integrated into platforms like CarPlay using the same tools and resources as other developers. However, it alleges that Apple is preventing it from offering updates and new features to users.
Spotify's grievance stems from Apple's revenue-sharing model. Only a small fraction of Spotify's subscriptions fall under this model, and Spotify wants this to be zero. It believes its business model, including carrier partnerships, should not contribute to the App Store. Apps that are free, earn revenue through advertising, or sell physical goods are not charged by Apple.
Spotify has been in talks with Apple about Siri and AirPlay 2 support. A Spotify employee, whose name is not disclosed, consulted with Apple on these matters. Despite this, Spotify claims it has been told that Apple is working on these features, suggesting a lack of progress.
Spotify wants to enjoy the benefits of a free app without being charged by Apple. Its Apple Watch app, reviewed and approved in September 2018, is currently the top app in its category, further emphasizing Spotify's popularity and independence from Apple's revenue-sharing model.
Spotify's dispute with Apple highlights the complex relationship between app developers and platform holders. Spotify seeks fair treatment, arguing that its business model should not be subject to Apple's revenue-sharing rules. The outcome of this dispute could set a precedent for other app developers in the future.
