Intersport, the largest sports retailer group in Germany, is set to grow further with the opening of several large premium stores and a focus on digitalization. The retail giant, which operates over 1,400 stores nationwide, aims to increase its turnover to around six billion euros and capture a market share of over 30 percent by 2030.

The cooperative association has already made significant strides in its growth, with Intersport having already exceeded more than half of its 2023 target. The group's fiscal year runs from early October to the end of September, and in the 2023/24 fiscal year, Intersport made a turnover of 3.46 billion euros, which was one percent below the previous year's peak. However, the retailer group has seen significant growth online and an increase in in-store sales over the summer.

Intersport is also investing in its own online marketplace and digitalization to support its growth. The premium stores, planned to be more than five by the end of 2026, will offer activities such as trail running events, alpine tours, ski tests, marathon preparations, and activities related to the upcoming men's football World Cup.

One of the key partnerships for Intersport is with Hyrox, an indoor competition involving running 8 x 1,000 meters and completing workout stations in between. Intersport is the official partner of several Hyrox races and is involved with its retailers in the events. Approximately 12,000 athletes are expected at the Hyrox event in Hamburg at the beginning of October.

Intersport's expansion plans also include the opening of at least 100 new stores in Germany by the end of the decade. The first of the planned more than five large Intersport stores in Germany is scheduled to open by the end of 2026, although the specific name and exact opening date of the first store are not yet confirmed. Intersport operates more than 400 stores under its brand, and the retailer group did not provide any information on profits for the 2023/24 fiscal year.

Von Preen, the CEO of Intersport, stated that Hyrox has become the world's fastest-growing fitness sport, with a strongly increasing trend. Intersport's involvement with Hyrox events is a testament to the retailer's commitment to promoting fitness and sports in Germany. With its focus on digitalization, expansion, and partnerships, Intersport is well-positioned to continue its growth in the coming years.
