Speed limits rise on selected North Dakota highways, while decreasing on other roads elsewhere in the state
In a significant shift towards faster highway driving, nine states in the United States have raised their speed limits on certain stretches to 80 mph or higher. The expansion of these high-speed zones includes the states of Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Wyoming, and North Dakota.
North Dakota recently joined the ranks of these high-speed states by increasing the speed limit on Interstates 29 and 94 from 75 mph to 80 mph, effective from August 1, 2025. This move has contributed to the broader trend of higher speed limits across the U.S.
The 80 mph speed limits are primarily applied to multi-lane interstate highways with long straight stretches and light traffic. For instance, in North Dakota, the 80 mph limit will be enforced on Interstates 29 and 94.
To ensure road safety, states have paired these speed limit increases with heightened enforcement efforts. North Dakota, for example, has increased fines for speeding and introduced automated camera technology for monitoring and enforcement.
It's important to note that although highways may have 80 mph limits, limits on urban roads and more complex or congested routes remain lower. Drivers must be attentive to varying speed limits within the same state.
Despite the adoption of higher speed limits, safety experts warn that increased speeds correlate with higher risks of fatal crashes. In North Dakota, speed and aggressive driving were factors in about one-third of fatal crashes in 2023. Some experts caution that raising the legal speed limits may lead to more severe accidents due to longer stopping distances and higher energy impacts.
Legislators supporting the increases argue that modern vehicle and road safety technologies make 80 mph speed limits reasonable where road conditions allow. They seek to align speed regulations with neighboring states to maintain consistency and reduce driver frustration.
Key cities in North Dakota, such as Dickinson, Grand Forks, Jamestown, Medora, and Valley City, are population centers where the speed limit has been reduced to 70 mph to ensure safety.
In Texas, some areas have a speed limit as high as 85 mph, making it the state with the highest speed limit in the U.S.
The changes in speed limits and fines in North Dakota were confirmed by the NDDOT to the Argus Leader. North Dakota has also passed House Bill 1298, which adjusts speeding fines.
Drivers are advised to stay informed about speed limit changes in their states and to always prioritize safety while on the road.
