SPD to Discuss Steel Industry Rescue Plan Amid Crisis
The steel industry is facing severe challenges due to low-cost imports and soaring energy prices. In response, the SPD board will discuss a strategy to bolster the sector on Monday. SPD figures, including Federal Finance Minister and Vice Chancellor Lars Klingbeil, are pushing for preferential treatment of German steel in infrastructure projects.
Klingbeil proposes using German steel preferentially in the 500 billion euro investment package. This strategy, 'Strengthen the location, drive transformation, secure jobs', aims to shield the steel industry from crisis in customer sectors like automotive. The SPD also demands robust trade protection against unfair foreign practices.
The party chairmen, Lars Klingbeil and Barbara Bas, want German and European steel to be preferred in public contracts. They advocate a 'Buy European' approach to counter foreign dumping competition. Bas, the Labor Minister, stresses the industry's importance to Germany's industrial location and national security. The SPD seeks lower energy prices and aid for the climate-neutral transformation of the steel industry.
The SPD is committed to protecting and strengthening the steel industry. Its strategy includes preferential treatment for German steel in infrastructure projects, robust trade protection, and support for a climate-neutral transition. The party aims to secure jobs and maintain Germany's industrial competitiveness.
