Skoda to launch a sports car model for its upcoming anniversary celebration
The Czech automaker, Skoda, has announced plans to expand its model range for its anniversary with a sportier variant of the Fabia. According to Skoda CEO Klaus Zellmer, a more powerful Fabia will be presented by the end of the year.
Prototypes of this more powerful Fabia have already been spotted on the Nürburgring, hinting at a potential power boost. The powertrain for the more powerful Fabia is still unclear, with both the Volkswagen Polo GTI's 2.0-litre TSI engine and a collaboration with Abt tuning being possibilities.
If the more powerful Fabia does come to fruition, it could fill the gap between the current Monte Carlo and the Polo GTI for customers looking for a bridge. Unlike the Polo GTI, the Fabia would not be designed as a hot hatch, but rather a sporty alternative.
The VW Polo GTI relies on a 2.0-litre TSI engine with 207 PS and 320 Newton meters. If Skoda were to use this powertrain for the more powerful Fabia, it would move the Fabia closer to an RS model, although official technical details have not been confirmed yet.
The Fabia's current engine range extends from 80 to 150 PS, with the strongest version being the 1.5-litre TSI with 150 PS and 250 Newton meters. If the more powerful Fabia were to use the Polo GTI's engine, it could instead use a 1.5 TSI engine with a performance boost, reaching 190 PS and 290 Newton meters, similar to the Fabia Rally2.
So far, the most powerful Fabia is limited to visual enhancements and chassis details. However, a more powerful Fabia may feature a performance-appropriate braking system, indicated by a new front spoiler lip and red brake calipers.
Skoda could potentially collaborate with Abt for the anniversary model, as they did for the Fabia Rally2. Official technical data for the more powerful Fabia, if it exists, is still missing. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting development.
