The German Packaging Industry (GADV) has released its annual report for 2024, shedding light on the changes and trends in the sector. The report indicates a decrease in the production of packaging materials, amounting to 17.1 million tonnes, marking a 2.4% decrease from the previous year.

The source of this information is Bundesverband Glasindustrie e.V., one of the industry associations supporting the GADV. The production value of packaging materials also saw a decrease, falling by 4.1% to 37.1 billion euros.

Notably, the report does not mention a decrease in the production of metal packaging. However, it does highlight that glass and paper packaging saw significant decreases. Glass packaging decreased by 2.5%, with its production value falling by 10.4%. Paper, cardboard, and carton packaging also experienced a drop, decreasing by 2.9% in quantity and 7.8% in value.

On the positive side, aluminum packaging was the only category to record an increase, growing by 1.3% in production and 3.8% in production value. Despite this growth, plastic packaging increased by 1.1% in quantity, it lost 1.5% in production value.

It's important to note that the GADV represents approximately 900 member companies and over 80% of the production value of the German packaging industry. The organization is a joint voice on material-spanning, economic, and technical issues, and it is supported by several industry associations, including Aluminium Deutschland, Bundesverband Glasindustrie, Industrievereinigung Kunststoffverpackungen, Verband Metallverpackungen, and economic associations of the paper processing industry.

The report also reveals that in terms of production value, plastic packaging still accounted for the largest share of 44.6%. In terms of quantity, paper, cardboard, and carton packaging dominated the market with 47.5%. The GADV, however, does not report on the production value of metal packaging or plastic packaging.

The GADV's annual report provides valuable insights into the current state and future direction of the German packaging industry. As the industry continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how these trends develop in the coming years.
