Unlucky Junk Removers Lose Cash Haul in Court Battle

Service dismantled following a hefty 600,000 euro cost

Get ready to roll your eyes, because a Bavarian junk removal company just got served... a loss! They found a whopping 600,000 euros in cash during a house clearance, but the Cologne Regional Court wouldn't let them profit from their luck.

Spoiler alert: The court said no way to their demands for a share and a finder's fee.

The disappointed plaintiff sued for a payout of 100,000 euros and a finder's fee, but the court had other plans. According to the court ruling, a contract clause that gave the junk removal company a claim to valuable items found during a job was deemed invalid.

The plaintiff's employees discovered the cash, along with jewelry and coins worth around 30,000 euros, in various packaging, including diapers, during the clearance of an apartment in Bavaria on behalf of the defendant. Because the clause was deemed unfair, the court ruled that the plaintiff couldn't automatically assume the client intended to hand over such valuable items.

As if that wasn't enough, the court also didn't think the junk removal company deserved a finder's fee, since they didn't find a lost item. The verdict, issued back in May, is still not final.

In addition, checking the official website of the Cologne Regional Court or contacting them directly for more details could provide access to further case specifics.

The Bavarian junk removal company's employment policy did not account for finding valuable items during a job, as deemed invalid by the Cologne Regional Court. Despite the hefty loss and a subsequent lawsuit, the court's finance policy declined the plaintiff's demand for a payout and a finder's fee. Furthermore, the court's business decision determined that a finder's fee was unwarranted, as the company did not formally locate a lost item.
