Russian Oil Tanker Boracay Resumes Journey to Sanctioned Indian Refinery

The Russian oil tanker Boracay, after a brief halt in Saint-Nazaire, has resumed its journey, now heading towards Vadinar in northwest India. The destination is significant as it houses India's second-largest refinery, operated by a company linked to a Russian billionaire under EU sanctions.

The Boracay, which had been under investigation in Saint-Nazaire, set sail again on Thursday night. Its Chinese captain and first mate, who were held for questioning, were returned to the ship. The captain faces a future trial in Brest in February 2026, charged with 'refusal to obey a maritime order'.

The tanker's new course takes it south-west, away from Saint-Nazaire and towards the Suez Canal. Its final destination appears to be Vadinar, where the refinery is operated by Nayara Energy Limited. This company is under EU sanctions as part of the 18th package targeting Moscow. Notably, Nayara Energy is owned by the Russian billionaire Gennady Timchenko.

The Boracay's journey continues, with Vadinar as its apparent destination. The refinery there is operated by a company under EU sanctions, owned by a Russian billionaire. The tanker's captain, meanwhile, awaits trial in France next year.
