The Verdi Strike Hits Kiel Canal Yet Again

Gear up, sailors! Verdi is beefing up the pressure and Kiel Canal's waters will be battleground once more next week. From Tuesday till Thursday, the union encourages employees of the Waterways and Shipping Authority North Sea Canal to down their tools.

Shipping companies received the heads up on Friday as their agents warned them about the upcoming work stoppage. "At first, I thought it was a prank. I'm unsure how I'll break the news to my clients. The strike will cause chaos on the canal for almost four days," shares Jens Broder Knudsen, head honcho of the Kiel Canal Initiative.

Rumors buzzed in Kiel's "lock radio" by Friday morning, and it's game over for ships entering the canal after 8 p.m. on Monday. The authority expects the strike to kick off with the early shift on Tuesday, giving all vessels time to beat the red flag. The strike is set to last until Thursday evening, when the canal's traffic will return to normal.

The union's gamble is all about striking the ship traffic control center situated in the middle island of the large locks in Brunsbüttel. It's the nerve center for the entire canal, comparable to air traffic control towers for us landlubbers. Without key staff members, chaos ensues on the Kiel Canal.

If civil servants took over the crucial roles, the looming strike could be averted, and the canal would remain open. "That's because the Kiel Canal is integral to critical infrastructure," remarks Knudsen.

Struggling Kiel Canal Faces An Uphill Battle Ahead

The Kiel Canal seems to be in the eye of the storm. The traffic dip started during summer of the previous year, and the upcoming quarter of 2025 might signal another downturn due to the ongoing labor dispute.

The traffic stats for 2024 are yet to be divulged by the responsible General Directorate of Waterways and Shipping.

Speaking of bad news, reducing speed for ships from 15 to 12 kilometers per hour, ongoing construction sites, and the upcoming closure of a lock chamber in Brunsbüttel in May aren't exactly the gin and tonic that the canal needs. "This translates to massive added costs for shipping companies," laments shipbroker Knudsen.

The Struggle Affects More Than the Canal

Rendsburg and Brunsbüttel also find themselves in hot water due to this tempest. "We need to ensure that the canal doesn't turn into a tomb for ships some day. It doesn't benefit anyone if no vessels pass through," advises Knudsen. Interestingly, the canal was a hot topic at the traditional rice and curry dinner of the pilots and the nautical association in Kiel just last week. "Pilots' morale isn't brimming with optimism," says the new leader of the pilots' guild NOK II, Markus Böhm.

The strike's ripple effects also impact the ports of Rendsburg and Brunsbüttel. According to Knudsen, entire industries are halted in Brunsbüttel, resembling conditions in France. For Verdi, the Kiel Canal is a serious weapon for wielding pressure. Container ship lines' feeder lines lose valuable days on their journey to the big leagues in Hamburg and Bremerhaven, causing schedule disruptions and supply chain chaos.

The inner and northern harbors in Kiel should remain unscathed, as the locks in Holtenau maintain operation and don't rely on Brunsbüttel's traffic control center. This means vessels for construction projects on the Kiel Canal and those for the oil terminal and grain silo in Kiel can continue to come and go from the locks.
