The Porsche 968 Club Sport, introduced in 1993, was a significant milestone in Porsche's history. With only 1371 units produced, it represented around 12% of all 968 production and has since become a modern classic and an undervalued gem in the world of sports cars.

Priced at $119,900, the 968 Club Sport was more affordable than the standard 968, making it an attractive option for enthusiasts. Its affordability, coupled with its performance, helped rehabilitate Porsche's reputation when it was needed most.

The 968 Club Sport was a more cohesive and cost-effective version of the car, designed to be more exciting to drive. To achieve this, Porsche made several modifications to the engine, which was fundamentally a development of the 944 Turbo’s engine platform but naturally aspirated and with refinements aimed at maximizing efficiency and linear power delivery.

Key modifications included revised intake and exhaust systems, enhanced engine tuning, improved cooling and friction reduction, and a higher compression ratio. These changes allowed the Porsche 968 engine to produce around 236 horsepower, up from the 944’s predecessor, while also delivering better fuel efficiency through more precise fuel management and combustion optimization.

The 968 Club Sport weighed 1320kg and was equipped with a 2990cc inline-4, DOHC, 16v engine, producing 176kW and 305Nm of torque. To further enhance its performance, the weight of the 968 Club Sport was reduced by approximately 50kg.

The suspension of the 968 Club Sport received attention, with ride height being dropped by 20mm and options including a Torsen limited slip differential, an even stiffer spring and damper package, fatter anti-roll bars, and cross-drilled brake discs. This resulted in a car that was praised by critics, with some publications declaring it the best handling car of its time.

The 0-100km/h time for the 968 Club Sport was 6.5 seconds. While expensive features such as electrically-adjustable seats, rear seats, rear speakers, electric hatch release, climate control, electric adjustment for the door mirrors, heated washer jets, driver's airbag, electric windows, a decent percentage of the cabin soundproofing, and the car's battery were removed from the 968 Club Sport, an optional Sport model was offered, featuring some luxury options.

The lessons learned from the 968 Club Sport program were applied to the development of the Boxster. Despite its limited production, the impact of the 968 Club Sport on Porsche's history and the sports car industry as a whole cannot be overstated.

Used prices for the 968 Club Sport start at around $80,000, making it an attractive investment for enthusiasts and collectors alike.
