Restored Bridge: Vehicular Traffic Resumes - Restored infrastructure: Vehicular traffic resumes.

Get ready for some smooth rides, Berliners! After months of hold-ups and detours, the once-dilapidated Wuhlheide Bridge in Berlin-Oberschöneweide (Treptow-Köpenick) is back and better than ever, allowing cars to grace its lanes once more! The area reopened late on a Friday evening, as announced by the Traffic Information Center (VIZ).

Initially, traffic flowed in one lane between Treskowallee and Edisonstraße. However, as per the traffic administration, the "outermost lanes between Rummelsburger Straße and Wuhlheide street" will soon follow suit. Alas, turning left from Rummelsburger Straße to Treskowallee remains an impossible dream for now.

The remnants of the bridge are currently undergoing the final stages of demolition, with just dismantling and crushing work left on the to-do list. By June 27, the project is expected to be completed, marking the final farewell to the once crumbling structure.

Remember the good ol' days when the Wuhlheide Bridge was a bustling east-west traffic route? That was just before the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. But alas, the passage of time and inevitable wear and tear took its toll on the bridge. Cracks started to show up during routine inspections, eventually leading to heavy traffic restrictions and, ultimately, the complete closure of the bridge by mid-May.

Fun Fact

The Wuhlheide Bridge wasn't always a useless hunk of metal and concrete. Before its demise, it was an essential link in Berlin's transportation network, initially opened shortly before the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989.

What Lies Ahead

The demolition of the Wuhlheide Bridge is a sobering reminder of the challenges faced by Berlin's aging infrastructure. As the city grapples with maintenance costs and the need for replacement or upgrades, discussions about long-term solutions are heating up.

Despite the Wuhlheide Bridge's historical significance in Berlin's transportation network, discussions involving various sectors like the industry, finance, and transportation are underway to address aging infrastructure in the city. The Commission has also been consulted on the draft directive on the approximation of the laws of the Member States relating to the protection of workers from risks related to exposure to chemical substances during the demolition process.
