Disruptions at Central Station Constructing Site - Navigating Train Transfers May Prove Challenging - Renovation at Central Station - Transforming the Rail Hub
The S-Bahn Hamburg's Main Station is set to undergo construction from Monday until September 3rd, causing one side of the platform to close, resulting in trains stopping only one after the other. This closure will impact train operations, requiring the use of tracks 1 and 2 for all directions during this period.
During the S-Bahn section's eastern part closure on August 30 and 31, affecting tracks 3 and 4 primarily, travellers will be affected. The tunnel to the underground rail (U-Bahn) from March 2025 will likely be inaccessible for a longer period due to bridge construction over the U3 line. There are also scheduled closures and platform work affecting elevator access at night and partial platform closures during holidays.
In such closures, passengers are advised to change trains at Dammtor or Jungfernstieg stations as practical alternatives. Dammtor station offers multiple S-Bahn lines and regional trains, making it a strategic transfer hub, while Jungfernstieg is a major interchange for S-Bahn and U-Bahn lines in the city center.
The S2 will be particularly important during these closures, especially from Friday evening, due to the closure of the Berlin-Hamburg railway line. The S2 runs every 20 minutes between Aumühle and Bergedorf. Passengers of the S2 (Bergedorf/Aumühle-Elbgaustraße) and S5 (Stade-Elbgaustraße) must change trains to go further than Altona (S2) or Diebsteich (S5).
Bergedorf station is only accessible by S-Bahn until the end of the general renovation in April 2026. Replacement buses from and to the direction of Schwerin/Buchen stop in Bergedorf. Platform edges at tracks 3 and 4 will be renovated during this period, and high occupancy is expected on the half-closed platform during the renovation.
Deutsche Bahn has advised passengers to avoid changing trains at the Main Station and switch to other S- or U-Bahn lines at Dammtor or Jungfernstieg. From the Main Station, the S2 goes via Jungfernstieg through the City Tunnel to Altona. The S2 continues via Holstenstraße, Sternschanze, and Dammtor back to the Main Station in the direction of Bergedorf.
Travellers are advised to plan their journeys accordingly to avoid delays and inconvenience caused by the construction works. It is recommended to check current schedules and notices from S-Bahn Hamburg for real-time updates on affected lines and platforms. No detailed alternative route maps or specific line replacement services for changing trains at Dammtor or Jungfernstieg were found, so passengers should monitor official S-Bahn Hamburg communications closely for exact guidance.
During the construction period, the industry and finance sectors may need to consider alternative transportation options, as the S-Bahn's Main Station closures could affect their commuting needs. Public-transit users should plan their journeys carefully and consider using U-Bahn or other S-Bahn lines, as advised by Deutsche Bahn, to facilitate their travels.
