Regulatory Strategy for Ticket Pricing in Germany, Beginning in 2027
The Transport Ministers' Conference in Munich has brought about a significant decision regarding the Germany ticket, a nationwide pass for local transport throughout Germany. According to State Secretary Stefan Schnorr, the Germany ticket will continue permanently, bringing an end to the uncertainty about its financing.
The states will also contribute 1.5 billion euros annually for the Germany ticket, ensuring its continuation for the coming years. This decision was made unanimously at the conference, with the federal government ready to provide its share as well, committing 1.5 billion euros per year until 2030.
Christian Bernreiter, Bavaria's Transport Minister (CSU), announced the changes, stating that the Germany ticket price changes will come into effect from January 1, 2026, with the ticket price increasing to 63 euros.
The price index to be developed by the Transport Ministers' Conference will consider factors like wage and energy costs. This means that from 2027, the price of the Germany ticket will be determined based on a cost index, providing both users and transport companies with clarity about the ticket's price.
The Germany ticket has been causing financial difficulties for transport companies due to previous, more expensive subscriptions. With this new decision, the revenue losses for transport companies are expected to decrease, providing a more sustainable solution for the future of local transport in Germany.
Stefan Schnorr considers it a good day due to the clarity that the Germany ticket will continue permanently, bringing an end to the political price-finding process for the ticket. The Transport Ministers' Conference aims to develop the cost index by autumn 2025, with the hope of providing a permanent and fair solution for the Germany ticket's price.
This decision comes at a time when the federal government is facing tight budgets, yet it has committed funds for the Germany ticket, demonstrating its commitment to providing affordable and sustainable local transport options for the citizens of Germany.
