This move is part of TxDOT's goal to cut taxes for Texans and ease roadway congestion, a priority emphasized by Governor Greg Abbott. The reduced toll rates will affect more than 10 miles of SH 288 from Interstate 69 to the Harris-Brazoria county line.
In addition to the toll rate reductions, TxDOT plans to construct two new free, general-purpose lanes along portions of SH 288 between Interstate 610 and Beltway 8 with some of the toll revenue. This expansion is expected to increase capacity and reduce congestion on this heavily-traveled corridor.
Commissioner Steven Alvis of TxDOT stated, "This move will help people now and plan for more free lanes in the future for faster and easier commutes between downtown Houston and Brazoria County."
